Jane Garcia Biosketch

Jane C. Garcia was born in 1948 in Detroit, MI. She is a self proclaimed “Detroit Chick” who has spent her life trying to help improve the city, especially for the Latino community. After her father left her mother, Jane Garcia moved around different foster homes and boarding schools. She was married to her husband, Henry, at age fifteen and adopted her first child in the same year. Jane came up challenging the patriarchal norms in her new marriage, though she does not identify as a feminist. She has been an activist ever since.
Jane is extremely unique. She is very active in the community with what seem to be very liberal ideas but she identifies as a republican. She spent three decades working for the U.S. census bureau doing multiple tasks including soliciting responses from the minority communities in Detroit. She ran and was elected to political office as a Republican. Through her work as a republican activist she has managed to get members of underrepresented groups into influential positions in republican administrations. Jane went on to become the director of La Sed, a Latin-American community outreach center located in Detroit. She has worked as the director of La Sed purely on a volunteer basis for decades. She began her work there in her late teens and to this day works without paid compensation.
